Lessons in leadership
During National Veterans and Military Families Month this November, our goal wasn’t simply to post a “thank you for your service” message; we wanted to be intentional and listen – especially to those among our employees who have served. That’s why, on Veterans Day, leadership reached out directly to our Veteran colleagues across Sharecare to hear their stories, learn about their service, and understand how those experiences continue to shape the work they do for Sharecare today.
One thing that stood out during our conversations was how much a genuine, direct thank you mattered to them, from one human being to another. And it reminded us that every Veteran’s story adds something unique and powerful to who we are as a company; and that our Veterans’ paths are as diverse as our company itself. The following highlights represent just a few of the many moving and incredibly cool stories we heard:
- One colleague worked in a “vault full of smaller vaults” inside underground bunkers in Korea and Germany, safeguarding critical communications systems.
- We heard from a Cavalry Scout who traded reconnaissance missions for customer service leadership, and a Signals Intelligence Analyst who once decoded transmissions for the NSA who is now decoding complex operational challenges every day.
- One of our teammates was a Flight Deck Fuel Specialist on an aircraft carrier – managing high-pressure jet operations – and now leads technology for one of our business lines with that same steady precision.
- A Navy medic who served 24 years and visited 30 countries told us, “I’d do it all over again.”
- Two of our ROI Specialists shared not only the same military job but also are on the same team at Sharecare – and they have the same birthday! A great reminder of the bonds that last long after service.
- One of our system administrators served in the Navy as an Aerographer’s Mate: a weather specialist who tracked conditions across land, sea, and sky. What a cool job title!
- And our CareLinx operations leader supporting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) once ensured soldiers had ammunition. Today, she ensures Veterans receive the care and support they deserve.
Different branches. Different jobs. Same shared values: discipline, teamwork, adaptability, and service to others.
Those qualities are alive across Sharecare. Veterans hold critical roles at our company, leading and supporting our technology, operations, customer service, analytics, sales, and leadership teams – bringing the same focus and integrity that defined their military service. Of course, our appreciation for Veterans and their service extends far beyond our own employees – and certainly well beyond the month of November.
Through our home care service, CareLinx, we proudly support the VA, connecting Veterans and their families with trusted caregivers and services that help them live healthier, more independent lives. That mission – to serve those who have served – is one we take seriously and intend to grow. You can read more about this in a blog from one of our Veteran leaders, Jami Veskerna; and if you or someone you know is a Veteran and passionate about our work at Sharecare, I encourage you to check out our open positions, including those for a CareLinx Care Advisor on Jami’s team.
On behalf of all of us at Sharecare, we would like to express our deep gratitude to every Veteran, milspouse, and military family at Sharecare and across the broader workforce. Thank you for your service, for your continued leadership, and for the example you set every day.
