Fortune Magazine and Bankrate cite data from Sharecare

In July, our partners Fortune Magazine and Bankrate both issued national demographic reports, which factored in data from Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index into their analysis.

Bankrate’s annual “Best and Worst States to Retire” study, found that Delaware is the best state for retirees in 2024, followed by West Virginia (No. 2), Georgia (No. 3), South Carolina (No. 4) and Missouri (No. 5). Meanwhile, Alaska (No. 50), New York (No. 49), Washington (No. 48), California (No. 47), and North Dakota (No. 46) landed at the bottom of the rankings.

Fortune Well released its annual “50 Best Places to Live for Families” list, showcasing the cities and towns across America that best support the unique needs of multigenerational households. Silver Spring, MD, took the number one spot, followed by Upper Merion, PA (No. 2), and Chantilly, VA (No. 3). Smaller cities tend to prioritize social and community well-being more than urban centers do, according to Dr. Michael Rickles, Sharecare’s vice president of research. Some of this year’s top places, have fewer than 30,000 residents and also scored among the highest on Sharecare’s Community Well-Being Index.

In his interview with Fortune, Dr. Rickles emphasized that our health is strongly influenced by the places where we live, work, and play. “We know that health isn’t just what’s happening inside your body,” Dr. Rickles explains. “It’s your social connections, your perceptions of safety, and there’s a lot that goes into what makes a city well.”

Our data partnerships with Fortune, Bankrate, and other nationally respected organizations help Sharecare extend the reach and visibility of our ongoing research with the Boston University School of Public Health. In the coming months, we’re excited to share our 2023 state rankings, which will reveal new data and trends from across the U.S. – and we’re proud of how our insights can support government organizations, employers, health plans, hospitals, and other community stakeholders to help more people live better, longer.
