Sharecare Names 10 Most Well Rested Cities in America

ATLANTA, November 1, 2013 – As our body clocks adjust to the end of Daylight Savings Time this weekend, Sharecare, the online health and wellness engagement platform founded by Jeff Arnold and Dr. Mehmet Oz, today revealed the ten U.S. cities with the most well rested residents. According to results from a sample of 250,000 RealAge® Test respondents, Sharecare’s Top 10 Cities in America for Sleep are: Milwaukee; Washington; Pittsburgh; Cincinnati; Chicago; Boston; Raleigh, N.C.; San Antonio; Philadelphia; and Hartford, Conn.

Sharecare’s scientifically-based health risk assessment, the RealAge® Test, shows that getting between six and nine hours of sleep each night can reduce your RealAge by as much as 1.5 years if you’re a woman and nearly a year if you’re a man. In contrast, not getting enough sleep can negatively impact your health in a variety of very serious ways.

“Sleep deprivation certainly increases risk of heart disease,” says Keith Roach, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Sharecare and co-creator of the RealAge® Test. “It also increases risk of obesity, worsens memory, increases anxiety and depression and may increase risk of excess alcohol use.”

In its research to identify the Top 10 Cities for Sleep, Sharecare also learned that these 10 cities are the country’s most sleep-deprived: Las Vegas; Portland, Ore.; Greenville, S.C.; Memphis, Tenn.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Houston; Louisville, Ky.; Seattle; Greensboro, N.C.; Tampa, Fla.
