Sharecare Names America’s Top Ten Cities with the Youngest Smiles

ATLANTA, GA, August 14, 2013 – Strong, bright, healthy teeth aren’t just a sign of good oral health – they’re also a sign of good overall health. That’s why Sharecare, the online health and wellness community founded by Jeff Arnold and Dr. Mehmet Oz that helps people engage with the most qualified resources, factors a healthy mouth into determining the RealAge Youngest & Oldest Cities in America. Based on results from a sample of 250,000 RealAge® Test respondents, Sharecare today revealed its ranking of the Top 10 Cities with the Youngest Smiles: Austin, Texas; Milwaukee; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Sacramento, Calif.; San Francisco; Minneapolis; San Diego; Denver; Washington, D.C.; and Seattle.

According to scientific data built into the RealAge® Test, brushing and flossing daily, and getting regular dental checkups can add roughly seven months to your life if you’re male and six months if you’re female. At the same time, poor oral hygiene negatively impacts your RealAge and increases your risk for heart disease.

“If you have nice, healthy teeth, your risk for heart disease is relatively low, but if you’ve lost more than a few permanent teeth – from things like smoking, diabetes, gum disease or even late-night snacking – your risk for heart disease is sky high,” said Dr. Keith Roach, MD, chief medical officer at Sharecare and co-creator of its RealAge® Test. “Also, severe dry mouth can cause as many health problems as losing your teeth because saliva helps protect against bacteria and keeps your gums healthy.”
